Everything must be taken in moderation. That same logic applies to the Internet. That’s why the iKidz device and a mobile app were invented, allowing parents to control all Internet-enabled devices and secure children from inappropriate content, prevent cyberbullying or online grooming and simply manage the time kids spend on the Internet for their sake. The main task was to redesign the mobile app and a handbook explaining how to use the product. We understood that limitless access to the Internet at a young age may have ill consequences, so we were enthusiastic about this project and the fact we may help save young, innocent souls from corruption. The main idea is to protect the child from malicious content, just like an umbrella in rainy weather. That’s why we decided to use the umbrella concept to describe core app features, trying to connect this idea with our design in the most understandable way possible. And here it is. Each child has gotten an umbrella of his/her own color, represented by a dot on the app dashboard card. It became the central decorative and functional element, increasing or decreasing on an app screen depending on screen time restrictions. If no Internet protection is required — the umbrella is closed, and the card remains white. But as soon as the parent sets the rules and presses the activation button, the dot fills out the entire screen with its color, simulating the umbrella opening. Now parents can take control of their children’s online safety from one app on their phone, and we’re happy to be somehow attached to this. At least by making their user experience more intuitive, easy-to-use, and making their life a bit easier.
